As the charismatic and dynamic therapist for the home, Barclay Butera has been redefining luxury throughout his entire career. He is the creative force behind his design firm which began in 1994 when he made his debut with his flagship showroom in Newport Beach , California and though his style may have evolved over the years, one thing has not changed: his firm belief in helping his clients achieve the “Better-Best” concept of living. Known for his considered, yet assertive taste Butera stands by his mantra: “In interior design there are no rules.” His style grounds itself in traditional European, American and Far East influences, while adding his own contemporary twist. He is inspired by everything from fashion to his world travels and by all cultural periods. He especially enjoys the iconic mid-century American styles of old Hollywood and West Palm Beach as well as early American design emphasizing clean, classic, tailored lines and the importance of intriguing fabrics.
Butera’s passion for interior design began at an early age when his mother realized his exceptional level of taste and recruited him to work on designing homes for private clients worldwide. After earning his degree in political science and economics, he pursued a career in law after graduation but within a year he returned to the interior design industry, opening his mother’s Southern California office. At 25, he found himself presented with a business opportunity to create and run his own case goods company out of Los Angeles. This marked the beginning of Butera’s development of a complete lifestyle collection (www.BarclayButera.com) where his taste, passion and vision could be executed.
Butera has always focused on listening to the client and working closely with what they want. “I’m a huge believer in developing a lifetime partnership with my clients,” he says. “I also believe that you have to have something for everyone. It’s always about the customer, the quality, and service.” To that end, the entrepreneurial designer has developed two umbrella brand identifiers within the Barclay Butera brand that focus on different qualities and price points, covering a vast spectrum of client needs:
BARCLAY BUTERA HOME is the couture upscale brand which focuses on his fine bench made upholstery and case goods, is distributed through over 300 retailers and designers nationally, and will soon be more accessible through high-end designer showrooms in the top design centers in the country. To date, Butera’s luxury brand can be found in the Denver Design District at Phoebe Marsh and at Chicago’s famed Merchandise Mart in the DeAurora showroom. Our latest collaboration with luxury showrooms is the ultra-chic ID Collections showrooms in both Dallas and Houston. Atlanta and San Francisco markets are underway. Butera’s book, Living In Style (Assouline Publishing), a complete retrospective of his interior design projects divided into lifestyles, was released in the Fall of 2008.
